BPOE has a long history of community involvement. Current projects include awarding Scholarships to exemplary local High School students [WV Lodges currently award over $48,000 in scholarships to high school seniors], assisting Veterans in the Clarksburg VA Hospital, hosting United Way events. They work hard to preserve their historic building, they give food and other assistance to HOPE [a domestic violence program and shelter] and the Soup Opera [a soup kitchen and pantry] here in Fairmont.
Of all the things the Elks do, perhaps nothing is more important than the work they do to help the youth of our country. The Elks Hoop Shoot is the largest co-educational sports program in America.
Elks Helping Veterans
Drug Awareness Programs. The WV Elks are committed to building a better future for our youth by spending $20,000 on alternatives to drugs. We have distributed over 100,000 pieces of literature free of charge to schools, DARE and to local businesses. Our state organization has a Drug Awareness trailer that travels around the state visiting fairs and festivals and handing out literature and promotional items like t-shirts.
In addition, each state Elks association has a Major Project. Our WV Project sponsors camps for disabled children. The camps are available for any individual 8 or older who has mental or physical impairment. This program is free of charge to participants.
The Elks have always demonstrated compassion for our Veterans. We treat them with respect and hold them in highest esteem. Our pledge: "So long as there are Veterans, the BPOE will never forget them." The WV Elks certainly do their part. Caring for our vets is something every Elk member is proud of.
We Elks are active in all of these charitable and civic endeavors, but we also have great fellowship and FUN! Check us out. Contact one of our local members if you are interesting in joining us in making our community and our world a better place.
